Our Curriculum Overview

From NOS to CBET

National Occupation Standards (NOS)

NOS are detailed written descriptions of what an employee is expected to know, understand and do in order to be considered “competent” in an occupation. NOS content represents valid benchmarks or current best practices and includes detailed specifications against which performance can be measured.

Competency refers to the ability to use knowledge, skills and attitudes in order to carry out work activities and achieve expected results. It involves knowing, doing and behaving, and reflects the harmonious blend of these aspects into successful performance on the job. NOS are competency-based.

NOS contain the analysis of an Occupation (duties and tasks, knowledge and skills, worker behaviors, future trends) and Competencies (Occupation-specific competencies, General competencies, Performance criteria)

NOS form the basis of the Competency-based curriculum. That is, The learning outcomes and assessment criteria of a competency-based curriculum are derived from the competences and performance criteria in the NOS.  This link between the curriculum and OS makes the curriculum relevant to the needs of employment.
