Information Communication Technology Technician - Level 5 and 6

ICT Technician Level 5 and 6 qualifications are designed to equip trainees with competencies that will enable him/her to be certified as an ICT technician. An ICT Technician is a person who can demonstrate underpinning knowledge and competence in Supporting or enabling the use of ICT equipment and applications, selecting appropriate ICT resources, techniques, configurations, procedures and methods, Installing, operating, and maintaining ICT systems.

Therefore, an ICT technician is a well-trained person who can carry out the above responsibilities. These responsibilities inform the units of competency of an ICT Technician certificate level 5 which include the following basic and core units of learning (and their durations in hours):

BASIC UNITS

  • Communication Skills
  • Numeracy Skills
  • Digital Literacy
  • Entrepreneurial Skills
  • Employability Skills
  • Environmental Literacy
  • Occupational Safety and Health Practices

COMMON UNITS

  • Basic Electronics

CORE UNITS

  • Computer Networking
  • Computer software
  • Computer Repair and Maintenance
  • Database System
  • Computer Programming
  • Operating System
  • Industrial Attachment

NOTE: These Units of Learning are independent of each other and may be taken independently. 

Units marked ** are taken in level 6 only

Duration

  • Level 6 takes 3 years
  • Level 5 takes 2 years

Assessment

The course is assessed internally and externally. Internal assessment is continuous and is conducted by the trainer who is monitored by an accredited internal verifier while external assessment is the responsibility of TVET CDACC.

Certification

  • On successful completion of a Unit of Learning, a trainee is issued with a Certificate that acknowledges the achievement of that competence. 
  • On successful completion of ALL units of learning, a trainee is awarded an ICT Technician Certificate qualification.
  • These certificates are issued by TVET CDACC in conjunction with KTVC

Admission Requirements

  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E.) with a minimum mean grade of D+(Plus) Or
  • ICT Technician Level 4 certificate with one year of continuous work experience Or
  • Equivalent qualifications as determined by Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA)
